The Jack Russell terrier was developed in England in the 1800s by a vicar by the name of John “Jack” Russell. He created two varieties of hunting terriers, one with longer legs (the Parson Russell terrier) and one that was slightly smaller with shorter legs (the Jack Russell terrier).
One fact worth noting is though the height of Parson Russell Terriers overlaps that of Jack Russell Terriers, oftentimes with Jack Russell being the taller one, a breed can only be considered a Parson Russell Terrier if its height falls within the 12″-14″ (30-36 cm) range according to the Parson Russell Terrier Association of America (PRTAA).

Jack Russell Terriers are currently bred for companionship and vermin control. They have been recognized as a separate breed since 2016 by the British Kennel Club. The American Kennel Club doesn’t currently recognize the Jack Russell Terrier. The breed is included in the Parson Russell Terrier category.
